Abt 10 yrs ago, got on sale a pogoplug - no it’s not a sex toy ok, it’s a “low energy microserver” as it was called back then. Looked like a deck of cards riding a sleigh basically im serious. It came w proprietary software & you had to use your web browser to log into their website to then add stuff to your pogoplug thru their website - which is basically🤦🏻♀️ cause it’s sitting right there next to you. Anyways, you could basically wipe it & put a LAMP server on it.
@kaho I remember pogoplugs! Yeah around 2012 I recall Victoria had a Fios house and ran a server out of her living room
@kaho I tried a public-facing home server once but shut it down in a hurry once I checked the logs and saw how many...entities...were trying to get in. Tailscale etc. would make that way simpler now
@n1ckfg oh god I’m gonna check my logs
@kaho I dunno how Yunohost does it, but I think there are ways to wall a Tailscale server off from the rest of your home network so an adversary who got in could only see that machine
@n1ckfg hm i will look into it. there's a lot of features built into yunohost that have been very helpful.
@kaho let me know what you find out, yeah I'd expect that since they're pitching this to folks who don't want to learn how to be an admin, it'll have some kind of VPN guy to protect your home network. There are lots of these, Tailscale is just the brand I know
I’m bringing this up cause https://loneliness.academy runs on a raspi which is much cheaper (if we ignore the supply issue) and easier to use. It’s p cool to know exactly where it is physically.
